About Mike
I was born in 1945 in Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire and was educated at St Paul's School and Beckenham Grammar School. I have two sons, Simon & Matthew and two grand-children, Adam and Christy.I have been in the food industry for over 35 years and specialise in exporting to the Caribbean. I lived in Jamaica for two years, working in a consultative capacity with a major Jamaican company. I have bred 3 Champion Water Spaniels, Ch Finstock Psalm, Psalm_pedigree Sh Ch Calypso of Malanis, Psalm's litter sister, and Int Ch Finstock Cruiscin, Cruiscin_ped owned a Show Champion German Shorthaired Pointer, Sh Ch Warringah's Frith, Frith_ped and I have exported several dogs to friends in the Caribbean. My last Irish Water Spaniel was Foulby Tyne Bridge of Finstock, known as "Geordie", whom I was unable to take to Jamaica in 1999 and who I gave to Elizabeth Cooper (Malanis). She has been a very successful brood bitch for Liz, producing Sh Ch Malanis Brown Stomper, in turn sire of the great IWS, Sh Ch Zanfi Tabitha, Sh Ch Zanfi Theban and Sh Ch Zanfi Ego, whom I rate not just as the best water spaniel that I have judged in almost 30 years experience but one of the best dogs that I have judged of any breed, and the lovely Malanis Brown Starlet at Foulby, who was Best of Breed and placed in the Gundog Group at Crufts, but who sadly died before she could attain her full potential. The Zanfi dogs also have lines back to Calypso and Finstock Magician of Rosetyne, Magician-ped who was the first male to go clear on the Kennel Club/British Veterinary Association Hip Dysplasia Scheme. My Tarbay Oonagh of Rossut Oonagh_ped incidentally was the earliest born bitch to gain a 0/0 clear score and was not X rayed until she was six years old. Oonagh is not important in UK breeding, but is very significant in European breeding through her son, Int Ch Finstock Cruiscin. I now have only one dog, A GSP, Alsziv Beoley Gold for Finstock, known irreverently as "Spike", Spike_ped. He can be traced back in a direct sire line through an import to the UK in 1947, Isgo of Blitzdorf, through to one of the founding dogs of the breed in Germany in the 1870's, Nero von Hoppenrade. Unfortunately, although appearing fit and sound, Spike has a very poor hip score and therefore is not shown or worked competitively and will never be used at stud. I am a Championship Show judge of Irish Water, Field and Sussex Spaniels, have also awarded Green Stars in Ireland to Irish Water, Welsh Springer & Cocker Spaniels and German Shorthaired Pointers and have judged most gundogs, the Gundog Group and Best in Show at all breed Open Shows. My main interests are Researching the pedigrees of breeds, in which I am interested. I maintain 24 searchable pedigree databases on line. See Pedigree page. Collecting antiquarian dog books and breed books on sporting breeds. Collecting dog and animal paintings and prints, particularly the works of Herbert Dicksee. See Herbert Dicksee Learning more about the various breeds and improving my ability to judge dogs. Nautical fiction, particularly the works of Alexander Kent, Dudley
Pope, C. S. Forester and Julian Stockwin. Detective novels and police procedurals especially the Rebus novels of Ian Rankin and the incomparably atmospheric works of James Lee Burke Researching into my family history, particularly the Herwins of
Norfolk and the Knaggs of Darlington. The music of Eric Clapton, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan and American composers, Walter Piston, Charles Ives and Aaron Copland. Cooking, particularly Thai, Malaysian and Indian food but with a broad interest in cuisine from anywhere in the world. We live in Stoke on Trent, with a German Shorthaired Pointer and a cat, and apart from our own hobbies enjoy the theatre, eating out and travelling, particularly in the Far East and to European cities, such as Prague, Venice and Rome.
On the left is the family's first German Shorthaired Pointer, from Michael Brander's breeding. He was a highly versatile dog, working with my Father both on rough shoots and deer stalking, in which field he was a brilliant performer. My sister, Rosanne, and brother, Charles, better known as Chazz are in front of him with Simon, the terrible terrier. |
