Herbert Dicksee's Deerhound, "Sir Brian"I was at West of England Championship Show and bought a copy of
the 1994 reprint of Van Bylandt's Dogs of All Nations, itself quite rare, as the
1904 original is not only as rare as hens' teeth but also, if not a pearl beyond
price, well beyond my pocket. I bought it as an addition to my collection of
canine books. I was delighted when looking at it more closely in the evening to
find this plate of Sir Brian. Sir Brian was bred by Mrs Winter, out of her well
known Ensbury Leah and was registered in Herbert Dicksee's name in the
Kennel Gazette of October 1991 and born 27th September 1889. He
competed at Crufts in February 1892, under the man who did more than anyone to
create the modern wolfhound, Capt Graham. He won the novice class and Capt
Graham described him as a good fronted and taking young dog, with indifferent
hocks.
