HD80002 The Dying Lion (Punch)
22.5", 13.5", , Watercolour, ,
Sold as "The Old King" but frame says "The Dying Lion"
as does the titling of the print
Rather lurid watercolour. Sold in 2004 for £850
Image exhibited at Royal Academy in 1887 Nr 1444 and
in 1888 Nr 349. Probably one was this original and the other
was the etching HD30226. The etching HD30225 was a preliminary sketch for this painting and etching HD30224 The Challenge apears to be the same lion, but a bit younger and fitter.

HD80003 Lioness in Vault awaiting entry to Ampitheatre,
Watercolour 8.75" x 7.5"
I have no further details at moment

HD80004 Border Collie lying on rug
In oils
Described as attrib to HD by Christies in sale 15/6/2000
Am very doubtful as quality and detailing not up to HD standards

HD80005 Rough Collie,
Black & White Chalk drawing on buff paper. 11.25" x 14.75". Signed
In sale documents described as Border Collie
but breeds were closer than they are now

HD80006 The Bloodhound
Black and White Chalk on paper, initialled
24" x 13" The same background as "The Sentinel" (HD10204) and obviously
the same dog but a near mirror image of the dog with slightly differing position only,
note height of hip joint above line of back. Sold in New York in 1999 for $1700 by
Bonhams and Doyle

HD80007 Suspense
Oil on canvas 1919 19.25" x 13.25"
Original of print HD30108
Sold for £15,000.00 at Phillips (now Bonhams) Leeds
on 19th Nov 1998. Failed to make reserve in June 2005 at Christies, when bidding only went up to £!7,000.00 against expected £25-£35,000.00
Photo taken from catalogue

HD80008 A Kentish Village
Oil on canvas 20" x 20.25"
Illustration taken from a 1986 catalogue of Phillipps, Son and Neale. The
price was then estimated at £1000-1500 but I do not know the price paid.
I have identified the village as Chiddingstone. The main timbered building is
now the Castle Inn. Chiddingstone is close to Penshurst Place, whose
gardens feature in The Old Garden, Goodbye and The Wishing Pool.

HD80009 A Romance
Oil on canvas
Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1886.
When I first saw this image, I thought that it
was an etching after an original by cousin Frank,
so pre Raphaelite in feeling but further research
shows that it was an original oil by Herbert.
