Etching titled "A Happy Family" exhibited at Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in

that he had lost, two years previously?
HD10203 The Last Defender,
10.5" x 8.75", , , ,
Published
in "The Portfolio" in 1893, with the following accompanying
letterpress:-
"Dicksee's etching tells its own story. The Jacobean House and the
seventeenth century pistol suggest the time of the Civil war. The assailants
have forced their way to the room, and are now beating down a door behind
which stands a bloodhound, ready to make a last stand for the King. The dog
was drawn from a very fine animal, which belonged to the artist, and died
last year."
The dog's official name was Duke Rollo, born Oct 1890, by Pathfinder ex Mr
P. Lindley's Dora (Kennel Gazette Oct 1891)

by C. Clifford & Co, in 1888, with 2 dogs on one piece of vellum, the other dog
being a Collie, under the title "Beauty and the Beast". It has often been split
and, because of the
placing of the two dogs, the margins of the individual
prints can look odd and ill proportioned.
