I am indebted to Sanders of Oxford for the knowledge that Punch was an elderly lion at London Zoo and that Dicksee made several studies of him for his "The Dying Lion"

Rather emaciated old lion lying in profile, with vultures nearby,
but head held proudly.
Exhibited Royal Academy in 1887 Nr 1444 and in 1888 Nr 349.
One of which was probably this etching and the other the original
water colour

One of only two prints known to be published by this firm; the other being
HD50105, In the Silent North (Polar bears) published in 1903
Have only come across this print as a signed lettered proof.

HD 30401 Lion, Deerhound and Tiger Studies
This print produced on one sheet but often split for selling. The Deerhound study about 5.5"x3.5" is seen more often but occasionally the 4"x4" Lion and tiger studies are seen. The lion head is similar to His Majesty HD30222 (1898) and the tiger head to A Tigress HD30313 (1891) and both contemporaneous with the life of Dicksee's deerhound, Sir Brian
