I have added this page to give some idea of values. It is not comprehensive and I will add to it as I get information. In most cases I do not know the exact condition, or even whether the state is artists proof , print on Creswick etc but sometimes it is clear from the description given by the auction house. Prices given are "hammer" prices and any buyers' premiums etc have to be added. All prices shown in sterling and, where applicable, converted at the contemporaneous rate.
Valuing Dicksees, even for insurance purposes, is quite a difficult task but factors that have to be borne in mind are:-
a) Desirability of the print. For instance, wire haired fox terriers are far less popular than they used to be, and there is not always a strong market for the number of prints produced of them. Deerhound prints tend to fetch higher prices, partly because Irish Wolfhound owners (or canny dealers) have tried to purloin Dicksee deerhounds and magic them into Wolfhounds. Some prints are rather sentimental and have less appeal. Some prints are unattractive to the modern public, like "The Dying Lion", an emaciated lion with vultures eying him from the background.
b) Condition of the print. Is it free from foxing or damp stains? If it is on vellum, is the surface too wrinkled? Have the margins been cut? Is it clean?
c) The state of the print. Is it a signed artist's proof? Were the numbers limited? Is there a modern reproduction available, as this tends to reduce the value? Has the plate been destroyed?
It is usually cheaper to buy at auction, if you do not take travelling costs into account. It is also usually cheaper to buy outside London, as the dealers do not have to pay such enormous rents or rates or such high staff costs.
However, in the end, like any painting or other artwork, a Dicksee is worth the amount of pleasure it gives to its owner.

Note-Descriptions and titles may not accord with auction catalogues eg A Sealyham Pup described by Bonhams as a Fox Terrier or a deerhound mis-described as an Irish Wolfhound. Some auctions have been omitted because they were unable or unwilling to give me sufficient information to identify the work concerned.
Where the state is marked n/k (not known), it generally implies that it was from the general print run, as any good auctioneer will mention if it is a signed proof.
